Support That Makes a Difference

Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in South India was re-established in 1972 under the direction of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Now home to over 400 monks, the Monastery continues to work to preserve their unique culture in exile. Each monk who chooses to join the Monastery family will be looked after for the rest of his life.

"I fully understand the difficulties and that the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery monks in South India are going through. Therefore I... welcome any assistance given to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in South India."

H.H. the Dalai Lama Patron of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery UK Trust

All the work done by the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery UK Trust goes towards supporting the monks in their monastery in India. Every year, projects are identified by the Administrators and our fundraising efforts are directed accordingly. However, there are also ongoing needs that must be met every day, including the cost of food, water and electricity, healthcare for all the monks, and the running of the school. For these essential expenses, we rely on ongoing unrestricted funds, distributed according to the priorities decided by the Administrators in the monastery.

Everything you give — whether a one-off donation or a regular payment (including sponsorship of individual monks) — is sent directly to the monastery to support the monks, young and old, who study and live in Tashi Lhunpo. Your donation helps sustain many areas of monastic life, including the Food Fund, the Clinic, the School, the Library and the Tantric College, benefiting the whole community from the youngest novices to the most senior monks.

Some supporters choose to make a one-off donation on special occasions, such as the Dalai Lama’s or Panchen Lama’s birthday, or ask for prayers for a relative who is sick or facing difficult circumstances. Donations can be made through our General Donation form.

As a very small charity, our administration costs are extremely low, meaning that any donation — however large or small — will go directly to supporting the monks. If you are a UK taxpayer, we can also claim Gift Aid, increasing its value to the monastery at no extra cost to you.

Thank you for supporting the monastery in whatever way you can.

Flexible Support

General Donations

Currently the UK Trust covers payments annually to support different departments in the monastery including the cost of the electricity supply to all the monks.

Any non-specific donations will be offered to the monastery as general funds to use according to the priorities of the Administrators at the time. This is because we believe that the Administrators, who make up the Local Committee of the Trust, are best placed to know the areas where support is most needed.

Essential Support

Food Fund

The monks are offered three meals a day. Breakfast is usually either Tsampa (roasted barley flour) or the special Monastery bread and Tibetan Butter Tea, made with milk and salt. Lunch is usually rice with a vegetable or dal (lentil) stew, occasionally with an egg. Dinner is Thukpa – Tibetan-style soup, sometimes with the addition of a piece of fruit. The monastery food is entirely vegetarian.

The funding for the food is paid through the Food Fund which is administered by the Administrators,  one of whom takes direct responsibility for the provision of food and the kitchen for his three years of office.

Total cost to feed the full community of 413 monks is £31,800 for one year.

Direct Support

Sponsor a Monk

One of the most meaningful ways to support Tashi Lhunpo Monastery is by sponsoring an individual monk.

By committing to a regular monthly donationtypically £15 or more — you can provide direct support to a monk as he studies, prays and lives within the monastery community. Sponsorship helps cover essential daily needs such as food, education, healthcare and living costs.

Many supporters value the personal connection that sponsorship offers, knowing that their generosity is making a direct and lasting difference in one monk’s life.
