The Monastic Orchestra

The instruments of the monastic orchestra are heard within the prayers, often to emphasize a particularly important section or to mark the division between two parts. The Gyangling or oboes, with their double reeds, are always played in pairs, the ornamentation of the notes being followed from the senior monk's lead. The Nga or drum, usually placed on a stand, is played with a curved stick from a sitting position, and lends rhythm to the prayer. The distinctive sound of the great Dungchen, or long horns, features prominently in the orchestral ensemble. These huge instruments can be up to 12 feet (3 meters) in length, and are played to alert the holy beings to the prayers taking place in the temple.
